Medjimurje miscellany

You may already know that Medjimurje is the last region that was incorporated into Croatia - it was Hungarian-governed until 1918. Also, the first Croatian railway (Kotoriba - Pragersko) was opened in 1860 and it passed through Medjimurje. In terms of geography, the northernmost point of Croatia is located in Medjimurje, near the village Žabnik. But did you know that the first registered table tennis club was founded in 1925 in Čakovec, the first oil field in Croatia (and maybe even worldwide) was discovered in Peklenica and that the largest wicker basket in the world can be found in Kotoriba? Finally, you surely didn’t know that even today gold panning is as active as ever on the Mura and Drava sandbars, gold that is among the purest in the world!
